"Code Complete, A Practical Handbook of Software Construction", by Steve McConnell.
I've read it three times through (!) and I still use it occasionally as a reference.
And although some of the material is a bit outdated, it is still an invaluable reference.
My favorites are chapter #4 – "Steps in Building a Routine", and especially chapters
#31 - #33 about programmer's personal character, intelligence, humility, intellectual
honesty...very inspirational reading indeed!

Essential .NET, Volume I: The Common Language Runtime
This is a must-read for anyone serious about .NET development. You might think you don't want to
know how the CLR operates and still be a successful application developer. (After all, what did you know
about the inner workings of MSVBVM60.dll back then?)
The truth is, IMHO, that when you want to be
a good application developer, you'll have to know a lot about the CLR. This book will give you
that information in a terse, "zero-superfluous-words" style.
